The equal parts personal and save-the-dimensions journey it takes you on, and the well-written characters that accompany you, make it wholly worth experiencing and more than earns a heartfelt recommendation. With the director behind Resistance 3 (arguably the best game in the series) and Sunset Overdrive calling the shots, there’s some promise.įor those of you in a hurry, you’ll be happy to know that the overall experience Rift Apart delivers across its almost 15-hour campaign run time is exemplary, and of greater value than just piece-meal critiquing of various areas (which we’ll get to). And does this new entry do enough to make the franchise relevant again, especially amidst the rest of Sony’s stellar first part lineup. With the overwhelming success of Spider-man, just where does Ratchet and Clank rank both inside and outside of Insomniac. Insomniac has always pushed itself to be a two-game/franchise studio, experimenting with new (and now shelved) IP like Resistance and Sunset Overdrive. With platformers not being the genre stars they once were in past console generations, it’s natural to wonder just how much time and effort was budgeted to this title when the studio’s other open-world Marvel-licensed game is out there getting all the attention. It didn’t reinvent the wheel, and the story and characters were clumsily written and starting to show their age. The last big entry in the series, released way back in 2016, wasn’t just a remake of the original game (and a fairly comprehensive one), but also a companion piece to a full-length animated feature that opened to lukewarm reviews. This game is fighting strong tides, setting aside for a moment the auto-boost it gets from being one of a handful of new-gen exclusives to come out right now.
RATCHET AND CLANK RIFT APART CHARACTERS SERIES
But before we get to the game itself, let’s take a pocket-dimension-sized detour for a quick series recap. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart releases on June 11, 2021, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.There are moments at the beginning of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart where you get this sneaking suspicion that you’re being set up for another by-the-book Ratchet and Clank game. Whether or not some allies will become foes or vice versa remains to be seen but there is a ton of potential for curve ball after curve ball in the new title. Alternate dimensions in the game could introduce alternate versions of previous characters, like Angela or Captain Qwark, that are not quite as friendly as Ratchet and Clank remember. With how many characters are likely going to be displaced fans could still see some familiar faces but in different roles. So far the story looks aimed at stopping Nefarious, but not much else is known. The interdimensional nature leaves the door wide open for Ratchet and Clank to have old allies return but, it could also be a situation with so much chaos that Rivet is the only one to count on. With little information out there, there is no real telling who all will return from the series' past.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has been shrouded in mystery since its reveal. Her entire role in the story could have major implications for the game’s lore, and with a significant amount of interdimensional travel at play, the future of Ratchet and Clank could be in for some major twists. While not a lot is known about her character yet, it looks like Rivet is also in the business of trying to stop Nefarious. Fans have been clearly shown that after his separation from Ratchet, the new protagonist Rivet finds him.
RATCHET AND CLANK RIFT APART CHARACTERS FULL
The ability to travel using rifts has been shown in some of the early game footage, but it does not seem like it will be a full replacement for the benefits that Clank has provided in the past.Ĭlank’s adventure, on the other hand, seems like it will be a major factor in how the story for Rift Apart plays out. With how integral Clank is to a lot of Ratchet’s movement in the series, it will be interesting to see how the wily Lombax’s gameplay changes. Nefarious.īased on what has been shown so far, it does look like Rift Apart will start with the two heroes side-by-side before Nefarious’ actions rips them quite a few dimensions apart. Rather than focusing solely on Ratchet and Clank’s adventures, the game will have them split between dimensions as they try to stop the evil Dr. The 2016 Ratchet and Clank aimed for the nostalgia of the original game, but Rift Apart looks like it will shake up the series' formula a bit. While they are usually the main focus of the game, their roles will not be as central as they were in other installments. Ratchet and Clank are the obvious first mention, though things are different this time.
